Recently, global glass giant AGC, in collaboration with German flat glass recycling specialist Reiling, announced a breakthrough in overcoming the industrial "flat-to-flat recycling" technical challenge for automotive windshields. This achievement enables the reuse of recycled windshields in the production of new vehicle windows, completely rewriting the history of windshield recycling being unable to meet automotive-grade applications.
For a long time, due to limitations in contaminant separation technologies such as PVB interlayer, plastic coatings, metal wiring, and electronic components, recycled windshield fragments have been unable to enter the industrial production process for new windows. Leveraging cutting-edge processing techniques and advanced contaminant separation technologies, the collaboration has successfully addressed the key purification stage of glass, enabling recycled glass to achieve high-value reuse.
Through long-term technical collaboration between AGC's R&D department and Reiling, AGC has validated a complete process solution that enables stable recycling of windshields in float furnaces. Reiling's exclusive recycling process efficiently separates high-quality glass from impurities, producing pure crushed glass raw material that fully meets the stringent production standards of automotive float glass plants such as AGC Retenice in the Czech Republic. The recycled windshield material is identical in quality, safety, and performance to virgin raw materials.
In 2025, the automotive processing teams at AGC's factories in Retenice, Chuderice, Tatabaya, and Koszalin, in collaboration with recycle glass, successfully incorporated tens of thousands of tons of pre-production glass cullet into their production systems, significantly reducing production losses. Building on this achievement, AGC has set an ambitious target for 2026: to collect and process over 300,000 pre-production assembled windshields, continuously expanding the scale of recycling.
Next, both parties will expand their mature technology to the post-consumer windshield recycling in the after-sales replacement, automotive parts market, and scrapped vehicle sectors, establishing a closed-loop recycling system for the entire lifecycle.
This technological breakthrough not only accelerates AGC's own decarbonization process but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable development in the European automotive industry. Through industrialized practice, it demonstrates that a closed-loop circular economy for automotive glass has transitioned from vision to reality, further driving the accelerated green transformation of the global automotive supply chain.
